Pirates Will Win the MTN8: Brilliant Khuzwayo

Former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo believes the Buccaneers have got what it takes to win the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns this Saturday.

This highly-anticipated decider takes place at Durban’s iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium from 18:00 this Saturday.

Khuzwayo paid Voice On The Move Radio studios a visit alongside Tyren Arendse who played for both clubs.

“Pirates have have always had an upper hand in cup games against Sundowns and they knocked them out of last year’s edition.

“Recent history suggests Mabhida is a happy hunting ground for Pirates as they have won both the 2020 & 2022 editions in the venue,” he said.

The last time these two sides met in a cup final it’s Sundowns who emerged the victors, winning the 2007 SAA Supa 8 final 1-0, courtesy of a Brent Carelse goal.

They have met in two MTN8 semifinals ever since, with Orlando Pirates winning the 2011 encounter 4-3 on aggregate and registering an emphatic 3-0 victory in the 2022 edition.

In terms of other knockout games, the sides have met three times in the Nedbank Cup. Pirates won the 2014 and 2016 quarterfinal encounters 2-1 and 2-0 respectively with Sundowns winning the 2021 quarterfinal clash 4-1.

Since MTN took over as the “top eight” sponsor the Buccaneers have won the trophy four times hence they’ve been granted the right to keep it forever while the Brazilians have won it once. Who will be the first team to get their hands on the new trophy?
