The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has on Thursday reported that a voter was killed after falling off a bakkie while one was arrested on election day.
Giving an update at the Durban ICC at a media briefing, the IEC’s Provincial Electoral Officer in KwaZulu-Natal, Ntombifuthi Masinga said the incident took place in Umsinga near Pomeroy.
The IEC also reported that a voter was arrested for assaulting an IEC official in Umlazi because he didn’t appear in the voters roll.
Masinga also said she said one person was stabbed outside a voting station in Bulwer outside. The IEC clarified that the incident had nothing to do with the elections but was too close to a voting station.
In another incident where an area manager was arrested at Umsunduzi Municipality regarding the issue of a sealed ballot box, IEC said the matter is under investigation. IEC has submitted its side of the story.
The IEC said counting at Mooi Mpofana Municipality are completed and they hope to finish all votes by midday on Friday.
The political parties are welcome to submit objectives under Section 55 objectives by May 31 at 9pm.
On issues related to questions regarding staff shortages and voting atations, the IEC said it had more resources including extra personnel who were deployed later on the voting day to after 5pm to assist kn counting.
Clarifying the issues of network which affected the voter management devices, the IEC said they had backup of the manual voters roll to make sure that the process was not affected.
On the issue of the voting patterns the IEC said voting patterns impacts on the large numbers which visited the stations after lunch.
The IEC thanked South Africans for coming out in numbers.
