Few hours left before the inauguration of President Cyril Ramaphosa and The ANC says there is still time for other political parties that have not joined the Government of National Unity (GNU) to reconsider their positions.
• Recently Patriotic Alliance (PA) have joined the GNU following the DA, IFP, and the GOOD party.
• PA says the reason why they have joined the coalition is because they were motivated by a commitment to find solutions through teamwork.
• DA believes that it is time for the country to embrace collaborative politics and problem-solving.
“The time for finger-pointing is over,” said DA leader John Steenhuisen.
• IFP also gave thumbs up to a coalition with ANC and said coalitions are the future of the country’s political landscape. He also pointed out that the electorate
had not given any single party a majority.
• GOOD party said their support for the GNU was made in the interests of furthering their commitment to a coherent national programme which includes
GOOD’s four foundational pillars of justice which are social justice, spatial justice, economic justice and environmental justice.”
However, EFF and MK party have said they will support an alliance of opposition parties called the “Progressive Caucus”.
The ANC’s Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri says discussions in the hopes of including other parties are continuing and the hands are open to any party who would want to join ANC in a coalition government.
The ANC proposed a coalition government after losing its outright majority in last month’s elections.
“We are comfortable that the level and speed with which these engagements have been taking place will result in a final thing come the inauguration and days after the inauguration.
“The president still has the prerogative to appoint whoever he appoints into various portfolios in government,” said Bhengu-Motsiri.
