IEC Commissioner Dr Nomsa Masuku has appeared in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting in Palm Ridge after being arrested for fraud by the Hawks’ Serious Conmercial Crime Investigation on Friday morning.
The 62 year old was allegedly charged with fraud to the tune of around R1 2 million dating back when she was in charge of Standard Bank’s Corporate Social Investment Programme.
According to reports, Masuku allegedly headed the bank’s Adopt A School Trust which handled bursaries to deserving students and schools participating in the programme.
Masuku is alleged to have dished out the scholarships to friends and family members instead.
In a statement, Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mohale confirmed the news and said some of the funds were deposited directly into Masuku’s personal bank account.
Masuku is out on the bail of R20 000 and her case was postponed to September 4.
