Ethekwini municipality continues to be the leading Metro countrywide in terms of spending of the urban settlements development grant (USDG).
Ethekwini mayor councillor Cyril Xaba said “the city spent 100 years and has received an unqualified audit opinion during the same period.”
A total number of R7.5 billion was allocated to various Metropolitan municipalities over the last financial year, according to National treasury report Metros around the country had spent 85 percent of the total available as of 30 June 2024.
Ethekwini Municipality had received R1,3 billion from National treasury and was the only Metro to have spent 100 percent of the grant.
City of Tshwane had spent 98.8 percent of the R948 462 funds allocated, followed by buffalo city who spent 94 percent of the R618 034 made available to them.
The city has also performed very well on the infrastructure settlements upgrading partnership (ISUPG) as June is coming to an end, spending 100 percent of the total available for ISUPG as of 30 June 2024.
City of Cape Town had spent 95.4 percent of the R663,272 million funds allocated, followed by city of the R667,269 million made available to them.
Mayor Xaba said in terms of bulk purchases, the city continues to honor its financial obligations with Eskom and Umngeni – uThuthukela water.
“We are pleased with the cooperation we are receiving from various stake holders including business, civil society and organized labour . The city will continue to engage with our stakeholders throughout the city to form strong partnerships to fast -track service delivery,” said Mayor Xaba.
