The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in KwaZulu-Natal has called the Department of Education to prioritise school safety to ensure that teaching and learning is not disrupted following the death of a Grade R teacher who was gunned down in front of her learners at Phikiswayo Primary School in Ntuzuma, North of Durban.
Whike the party believes that the violence in schools is a societal problem, it has called upon the parents, the community as well as the law enforcement agencies to work together in creating safety learning environments, and in combatting moral degeneration.
In another separate incident also this week, reported in Kwa-Mashu, teachers were robbed of their valuables by gunmen at Mukelani Primary School in broad daylight.
In KwaNongoma, at Sihlahlasenkosi High School, a Grade 11 learner stabbed a grade 12 learner to death inside the classroom.
The Party has expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased learner and teacher.
KZN Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka has also appealed to parents, governing bodies as well as community members as well as the teacher unions to work with the department in finding a the lasting solution.
He also announced that his department has joined forces with the University of Zululand to host a Schools Safety Summit where there will be deliberations on the issues of safety in schools.
The MEC added that the issue of schools safety will also be discussed at the Provincial Government Social Crime Prevention Summit organised by the Premier Thami Ntuli at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban.
