Childhood Cancer is a rare but serious illness, affecting around 400,00 children globally each year.
In South Africa, approximately 1000 new cases are reported annually. Though survival rates have improved in high-income countries, where over 80% of children survive for five years or more, the outlook is grimmer in low- and middle-income countries, where survival rates can
be as low as 20%. Limited access to early diagnosis and treatment is a major factor in these disparities.
Unlike adult cancers, which are often linked to lifestyle factors such as smoking, or diet, the causes of most childhood cancers remain unknown. Environmental factors rarely play a role in childhood cancer. However, some children may have a genetic predisposition, to conditions like
Down Syndrome, which increases their risks.
Early detection of childhood cancer is essential for better outcomes. Symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, prolonged fatigue, lumps, frequent infections, or unusual bruising should be taken seriously by the parents and guardians. When cancer is suspected doctors use diagnostic tools like imaging scans, biopsies, and lab tests to confirm the diagnosis.
Support for families affected by childhood cancer is crucial, both emotionally and financially.
September is taken as a Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the health calendar of South Africa, which is why in KZN, organizations like Cupcakes of Hope provide direct support to children and families battling cancer. Their initiatives, including National Cupcake Day and #Bake4Cancer Fundraisers, raise much-needed funds through community involvement.
Cupcakes of Hope assists more than 230 children each month by covering medical bills and providing essential items. The organization also delivers educational packs to pediatric oncology wards and donates medical equipment and prosthetics to children who have lost limbs to
cancer.
This September, Cupcakes of Hope will hold National Cupcakes Day, where communities come together to bake and donate cupcakes to raise funds. Every R10-R20 donation for a cupcake helps support children fighting cancer, even those who can’t bake can contribute by donating ingredients or funds.
Through efforts like these, we can make a difference in the lives of children affected by cancer. Together, we offer them hope.
