South Africa’s Taxi Industry Mourns the Loss of a Visionary Leader: I.P.T.A. Chairman and SANTACO Gauteng Head

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has confirmed the passing of Mr. Buti Johannes Mkonza, the respected Chairman of the Ivory Park Taxi Association (I.P.T.A.), who died on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at the age of 55. He passed away at Mediclinic Midstream Hospital following a short illness.

Mkonza was a pivotal figure in the South African taxi industry, also serving as the former Chairman of SANTACO in Gauteng. His leadership was marked by a commitment to economic empowerment and the promotion of innovative financial strategies, including Stokvel initiatives that helped improve the monetary well-being of many in the industry.

SANTACO President, Mr. Motlhabane Abnar Tsebe, expressed deep sadness at the news, describing Mkonza as a “remarkable leader, pioneer, and hero” whose “visionary leadership and selflessness leave an indelible mark on the taxi industry.” Tsebe added that Mkonza’s legacy would continue to inspire future leaders in the sector.

Mkonza was known not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his mentorship and dedication to uplifting others within the industry. His untimely passing has left a significant void.

To honor his life and contributions, a memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 12:00 PM at Gallagher Estate. Industry colleagues, friends, and stakeholders are invited to gather in remembrance of Mkonza’s outstanding work and leadership.

SANTACO has extended its condolences to the Mkonza family during this difficult time. Funeral details will be communicated in the coming days.
